Sony A7 III Shutter Failing / by Bo Johnson

The Sony A7III has just really disappointed me. So much so that it is gone. So much gone, I do not believe I will buy another one of their cameras again. I just can’t trust the brand. Yep, those are harsh words. Let me explain. I bought this camera in the 2019 timeframe and I shot maybe less than 10k worth of images on it. The autofocus was fast, sticky, and just worked brilliantly, especially for portraits. The eye detect feature was the primary reasoning for this purchase. Blah, Blah, I could go on with the plus sides and some negatives too, that are always subject to each individual user. What I cannot stand is when I get a white curve on the left side of the frame during a portrait shoot. Especially with a newish camera with hardly any mileage on it.

I was shooting high speed sync flash, starting at 1/1000th and up, and this white curve just showed up. It became more visible as the shutter speed got faster. Any shutter speed below 1/1000 the curved bar faded away. I sent photo examples to a Sony camera technician and he told me that the shutter was beginning to fail. This is unacceptable. It just so happened that the camera was just out of warranty and it would cost $500-$600 to get it fixed. Then what? Down the line replace another shutter? No thanks. I also read other articles that other Sony users were having this issue as well. Some even had their shutters just flat break apart. I sold my camera but for more than it would cost to repair it and went to Nikon mirrorless (Z6 II). I never had any issues with Nikon other than my own fault, such as a horizontal submersion in water from direct hits of a massive water balloon fight... Nikon D3. Even when it dried out, that camera still worked. Mirrorless cameras are a fairly new technology to Nikon. The guts of these machines have not been totally proven yet in harsh conditions that I may use them in. At least I have a certain amount of trust thus far with the Nikon brand.
